Brake pad clearance should be adjusted using the pad adjustment bolt.
While adjusting with the Brake-leverage adjustment bolt will change the position of the outer pad, it will also affect the brake feel.
If adjusted significantly, it may enter the “danger zone,” which can be hazardous.
Only use the Brake-leverage adjustment bolt in emergency situations—such as when you’re away from home, without a hex wrench, and the pads are significantly worn—where not adjusting the lever stroke would pose a safety risk.
Even in such cases, if squeezing the brake lever causes it to enter the danger zone, stop riding immediately.
